Communication is key, it’s something that is crucial within the work place, especially within the recruitment world. Whether it’s between my client and I or candidates keeping me informed on their job search, it’s all necessary – after all I am not telepathic and I cannot read minds.

“Reaching out” is hands down one of my most hated phrases, but it makes so much sense. I am constantly “reaching out” to my candidates, informing them on roles, finding out if they are still looking and what they are now looking for. It is forever changing therefore keeping in ‘comms’ is an absolute must.

Likewise, with clients, situations change, recruitment freezes are installed or as we all know, life just gets busier and an extra pair of hands are needed.

During my time here at Attic we have had a number of cases where there can be miscommunication, the majority of which are so easily avoidable if people were slightly more ‘open’ and say it like it is.  From our point of view, we sometimes struggle with clients not giving us enough information on the role or withholding key facts about a position or the individual our candidates would be working with. Alternatively, when dealing with candidates who are told about a role, go for it and are simply too scared to say it’s not for them, after the 1st, the 2nd or sometimes even the 3rd which totally baffles me.

What I am asking for is for people to empathise with me, I get a huge amount of pleasure finding people jobs, ensuring that they are happy and watching them thrive. I just ask for people to be honest and truthful to themselves. I find it disheartening when a candidate goes AWOL after we have worked together for several weeks on a position. If you have found a job or aren’t keen on the one you’ve just interviewed for, tell me – I am not going to bite your head off! After years of this, I have come to realise that if people are open with us they are 10 x more likely to get a call back about new role. Yes, we might not have found the perfect match 1st time around, but I guarantee we will give it another go, as long as there is an understanding between consultant and candidate.

Communication is something that comes with experience and it’s something which some people are brilliant at and others it may not be their strongest point, but it is something that is so valuable within life, so please do not be afraid to be frank with us!
