The grass is not always greener!

I began working at Attic Recruitment five and a half years ago, when I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed graduate who had typically just returned from travelling and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I registered with Attic Recruitment as a candidate, but the timing was such that they had a junior vacancy and offered me a position within the business. Although my dad had spent many years in headhunting, I must admit recruitment had never really crossed my mind as a career path. Having said that, Attic certainly seemed to be a great place to work, a wonderful atmosphere and the role seemed varied and a great place to learn. I was sold! Five years on, I had successfully worked my way up to Senior Consultant and had carved out really strong and lovely relationships with a huge variety of clients and learned a lot about different industry sectors and different roles within those.

As much as I loved my job, after five years in recruitment I began to wonder if it was my long term career. I felt as though I had fallen into it a little bit and although I seemed to be successful and certainly enjoyed the variety of the role I wondered if there might be something out there which could be more rewarding. I had always thought I would like to work within the charity sector and so I took a role working for a large and well known military charity and took the leap and left Attic – it was a big decision to make but I was sure I needed to try something new.

After only 3 months in my new role I knew that it wasn’t all I had been hoping for. Although it is completely personal preference, I sadly found working for a larger company (be it charity or not) was actually much less rewarding than working for a small company and that not only did I miss the buzz of recruitment, I also missed the job satisfaction in helping people to find their dream jobs!

Recruitment is a hugely rewarding, varied and satisfying job and I really love it. I’m pleased I had the chance to come back to it and am lucky to have finally found my vocation!

I have a huge amount of confidence in the team at Attic – they have taken a lot of time and trouble to understand the culture and nuances of our business and it shows. I will keep asking them to support us because I know they will deliver a great result – quickly and with style.
